Abstract

In electroplating, etching is prevented in the non-plating low current density areas of the cathode by placing an electrically conductive baffle in direct physical and intimate electrical contact with the cathode between the plating and non-plating areas. The baffle may be of a shape geometrically complementary to the low current density areas of the cathode and direct electrical contact may be augmented by conductors clamped to both baffle and cathode. As described the process is applied to electroplating the inside or outside of cylinders with chromium from a chromic acid bath containing sulphate and silico-fluoride ions, but is applicable to plating with metal any metal article especially iron alloys such as cast or wrought iron, or carbon, nickel or stainless steels in highly polished condition. The baffle may be of carbon or of any metal, e.g. iron, steel, nickel or it may be of the same metal as the cathode or have an etch-resistant surface as of Watts nickel, silicon containing iron, or metals of hydrogen overvoltage less than 0.33 volts at a current density of 0.1 amps/dm2 (see The Corrosion Handbook by H. Uhlig, John Wiley 1948) as in Specification 1,064,295.
