Abstract

<PICT:1064443/C6-C7/1> Selected areas of a cathode to be electroplated are stopped off by placing adjacent each such area a thief cathode which is at a more negative potential than the main cathode. The thief cathode may conform geometrically to the area being stopped off and to avoid metal deposition it may be coated with a metal such as platinum as disclosed in Specification 1,063,781 Reference is made to the plating metal being Cu, Sn, Zn, Ni, or Cr. Typically a low carbon steel rod 13 having threads 14 on which no plating is desired is immersed between anodes 15 with ring thief cathodes 19 of 0.4% carbon steel adjacent the threaded regions. In examples successful stopping is effected when plating with chromium from a CrO3/H2SO4 bath employing lead-tin anodes or with nickel from a Watts bath using nickel anodes. For chromium the thief cathode is at least 2 volts more negative than the main cathode while for nickel the thief cathode need be only 0.2 to 0.3 volt more negative.
