Abstract

Acetylpyridines are prepared by reacting the corresponding hydroperoxyethylpyridines with an aqueous solution of an inorganic reducing agent, specifically ferrous sulphate or an alkali metal sulphate or bisulphite. Sulphuric acid may be used with ferrous sulphate. A solvent may be used, e.g. the ethylpyridine corresponding to the hydroperoxyethylpyridine reacted or ether. Examples describe the preparation of 2-methyl-5-acetyl pyridine from 2-methyl-5-(11-hydroperoxy-ethyl) pyridine. Specification 867,488 is referred to.
