Abstract

The invention comprises 2,2,3,3-tetrachlorosuccinic dialdehyde monohydrate of formula <FORM:1010564/C2/1> and also an adduct of 2,2,3,3-tetrachlorosuccinic dialdehyde, 2,2,3,3 - tetrachlorobutanediol-(1,4) and water in the molar ratios of 2 : 1 : 2. This adduct is obtained by subjecting butynediol-(1,4) in an aqueous solution containing a mineral acid having a dissociation constant of at least 10-4 and copper and/or a copper compound to the action of chlorine at a temperature of about 0 DEG to about 130 DEG C. The monohydrate is prepared by first reacting the above adduct with aniline to give a compound believed to be 2 - hydroxy - 3,3,4,4 - tetrachloro - 5 - anilino-tetrahydrofuran and then reacting this with dilute mineral acid. The above adduct may also be converted into the methyl acetal of 2,2,3,3-tetrachlorosuccinic aldehyde using methanolic HCl or into 2,2,3,3-tetrachlorosuccinic acid using cone. HNO3.
