1,135,789. Isatoic anhydride and halogen derivatives thereof. MAUMEE CHEMICAL CO. 14 Oct., 1966, No. 45930/66. Heading C2C. Isatoic anhydride and halogen derivatives thereof of the formula in which Z, Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>11</SP> and Z<SP>111</SP> denote hydrogen or halogen atoms, are made from phthimide or the corresponding halogenated phthimide by a process comprising converting the phthimide into an aqueous solution of a salt, treating the salt solution with a metal hypohalite, such as sodium hypochlorite, and finally acidifying the mixture. The time which should elapse between the formation of the salt solution and the addition of hypohalite is indicated graphically by reference to the reaction temperature, which may be up to 45‹ C. The final acidification should be sufficient to establish a pH value of 5À5-9. Examples are given.
