To balance lateral forces on the shafts of gear. wheels 2, 3, due to pumping and shaft-driving forces, fluid under delivery pressure (for a pump) is led to asymmetrical chambers 12, 121 on arcs around bearing blocks 10, 10<SP>1</SP> for the gear shafts. Grooves 9, 9<SP>1</SP> render the portions of the blocks between, elastic. Sealing pieces 11, 11<SP>1</SP> are provided at the ends of the chambers. The pressure zones may be unequal in size and act at different angles. As shown for a pump the inlet 4 has extensions 6, 6<SP>1</SP> leaving only small arcs 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to act as seals for the gear teeth between inlet and outlet ports. A shaft 21 drives the pump.
