Abstract

864,404. Separating liquid particles from air. SOC. D'OPITIQUE, DE MECANIQUE D'ELECTRICITE E T DE RADIO O.M.E.R.A. Oct. 2, 1957 [July 22, 1957], No. 30903/57. Class 123(3) A separator for removing entrained particles from a gas, for example moisture entrained in compressed air feeding a vehicle brake system, comprises a chamber 1 the upper wall of which is a thin diaphragm in which a circular aperture 2 is provided. A nozzle 3 spaced from the aperture directs a stream of the contaminated gas into the chamber wherein deposition of most of the entrained particles occurs, the partly purified gas exhausting through the aperture around the incoming stream and flowing successively through annular separating chambers 4, 5 wherein the remaining particles are removed. To ensure that turbulence between the gas streams entering and leaving the chamber 1 does not occur, to prevent re-entrainment of deposited moisture and to ensure that moisture will continue to be removed even when the chamber is nearly full of liquid, the diameter of the aperture 2 is made from twice to three times that of the nozzle outlet and the latter is spaced from the aperture by a distance which exceeds the radius but is less than the diameter thereof.
