Abstract

852,163. Separating liquid particles from gases. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 23, 1958 [May 24, 1957], No. 16582/58. Class 123(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A separator for removing finely divided liquid droplets or dust particles from a gas stream consists of a cylindrical casing 12 across which is mounted a series of staggered row of struts 13 of substantially streamlined tear-drop cross-sectional shape as shown in Fig. 3. The casing is preferably substantially vertically positioned with the inlet 11 at the top and the outlet 15 at the bottom. The finely divided matter impinges on the struts and passes therefrom into a collector chamber 14 whence it is removed through conducts 16. To secure the struts firmly to prevent rattling in use whilst allowing them to be removed easily for cleaning they are held in position by a series of retainer rings 17, each ring having edge slots which co-operate with those on the adjacent rings, Fig. 3, to define openings into which fit the ends of a row of struts. The assembly is mounted between standard flanges and held together by rods extending therebetween. When the carrier gas is acidic the casing, struts and retainer rings are made of an inert substance such as resin impregnated graphite. For large diameter casings wherein excesive strut length would cause re-entrainment, short struts are assembled into units having separate drain chambers and the units are arranged to fill the casing.
