Abstract
988,692. Separating liquid particles from air. LOCKER INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 13, 1961 [June 18, 1960], No. 21496/60. Heading BIT. A separator for removing liquid particles from air comprises a first zone of matted non- absorbent fibrous material, such as glass fibre, and spaced from it a second zone consisting of layers of gauze-like mesh of non-absorbent material, such as wire mesh. Air laden with finely divided particles of liquid, e.g. oil, enters a container 10 through an inlet 11 and passes radially through the two zones 16 and 15 into a central tube 14 and leaves the separator by an outlet 13. The first zone consists of a mat of glass fibre mounted on and secured to a perforate cylinder 16a by binding strips 16b and enclosed by a further cylinder 16c of woven wire. The second zone, mounted coaxially with and inside the first and second therefrom consists of an inner cylinder of crimped phosphorbronze wire mesh an intermediate cylinder of non-crimped galvanized steel wire mesh, and an outer cylinder of crimped galvanized steel wire mesh, all mounted around the inner tube 14. Coalescence of the liquid particles and separation from the air stream is brought about in the first and second zones respectively. The liquid falls to a collecting chamber below the disc 4a and is discharged via the outlet hole 21 and the central tube 20. The tube 20 also serves to hold the unit together between the end flanges 12 and 19. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), in which the unit is intended to be mounted with its axis horizontal, the second zone consists of flat circular discs of knitted and woven wire, and lies at one end of the container so that the air passes radially through the first zone and axially through the second. Liquid is discharged through a hole in the end mounting flange. A cylindrical shroud prevents direct impingement of the oil-laden air on the first zone of the separator.
