Abstract

Crude benzene prior to being refined by treatment in the vapour phase with hydrogen over an oxide or sulphide of an element of Group 5, 6 or 8 at elevated temperature and pressure, is washed with water, preferably an amount of 2-15% by weight of the crude benzene before being compressed and heated. After washing the benzene is stored in the presence of hydrogen for 1/2 -2 hours at 20-200 atmospheres and 180-300 DEG C. to polymerise unsaturated impurities. The vaporisable material is then vapourised and more hydrogen added while high-boiling residues are rejected and the vapour-hydrogen mixture is heated to about 340 DEG C. and passed over the catalyst which may be disposed on a carrier, such as molybdic acid-zinc oxide or molybdic acidalumina. The product is cooled, the gases separated and recycled and the liquid product alkali and water washed.
