Abstract

Phenanthrene is purified by treatment with hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a hydrofining or autofining catalyst and recovering purified phenanthrene from the product. Preferred catalysts contain cobalt and molybdenum oxides on alumina but compounds of other transition metals of Group II, VI or VIII may be used, e.g. zinc and molybdenum on alumina. Suitable conditions are 350-450 DEG C. and 5-70 atmospheres with 1-5 parts by volume of catalyst per part of phenanthrene. The starting material is preferably concentrated by distillation and the product fractionated and recrystallized from ethyl alcohol. Specification 769,293 is referred to.
