Abstract

The invention relates to a method of purification of phenol prepared by the cumene process wherein the genetic impurities thereof are converted by selective specific hydrogenolysis carried out in the presence of a catalyst selected from oxides and sulphides, of the metals of the sixth and eighth group of a Periodic Table, especially Mo, W, Cr, Fe, Co and Ni, using hydrogen at pressures of 1 to 300 atmospheres, preferably of 1 to 50 atmospheres and temperatures from 180 DEG to 450 DEG C. preferably at 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. The products are then separated from the phenol by fractional distillation of the phenol. The oxides or sulphides serving as catalysts are used individually or in admixture either as such or applied to carriers.
