In a borehole pump, the pump shaft 1 is supported in a rubber bearing 2 which is disposed between a sleeve 3, secured to the shaft 1, and a bearing mounting 4, and lubricating water which flows axially downwardly through the bearing 2 passes from a chamber 6, on the outlet side of the bearing, through one or more restricted passages into a chamber 8 at lower pressure. Packing 7 is located between the chambers 6 and 8 and the restricted passages may either pass through the packing or alternatively may consist of a by-pass passage 9 in the bearing mounting, as shown, or it may consist of a groove in the shaft. In a modification, the sealing member consists of overlapping, spring- dressed, annular members 10, 11 at least one of which is provided with one or more small passages permitting a limited flow of lubricant through the sealing member. The chamber 8 is sealed from the delivery side of the pump by a throttling clearance 13 between the blade carrier 14 and bearing mounting 4. Relief passages 15, 16 connect the chamber 8 with spaces of relatively low pressure.
