862,224. Valves. AMERICAN CAN CO. Dec. 22, 1958 [March 13, 1958], No. 41305/58. Class 135. [Also in Group XVII] A valve arrangement for equalizing the pressure between the exterior and interior of a container comprises a resilient member 10, Fig. 4, attached to a wall 4 of said container adjacent an aperture 18 in this wall and defining with the wall a channel 16 with permanently closed sides to define a passage for fluid flow between the exterior and interior of the container, the member 10 being unattached to the wall 4 at one part at least and co-operating with the wall at this part to provide a resilient valve, In Fig. 2 the internal surface of the container 4 has an arcuate strip of flexible thermoplastic material 12 cemented in position along its longitudinal margins 13, except for its end 14. If a cap 22 is removed to expose a dispensing nozzle and the container is squeezed to expel the contents, the strip 12 is forced against the wall 4, particularly at the part 14, to form a seal over the hole 18. If a reduced pressure occurs inside the capped container, the strip 12 will deflect to open the channel 16 and permit air to enter. In the case of a container containing coffee, the member 10 may be applied externally to relieve carbon dioxide generated by the coffee. Specification 798,069 is referred to.
