Abstract

861,911. Injection moulding. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 3336/57. Class 87(2). A worm conveyer 17 is rotated in a plasticizing chamber 11 to force material therethrough, and the chamber 11 has a ram 30 thereon adapted to be forced into an injection chamber 31 to effect injection through a nozzle 32. In Fig. 1 the worm 17 forces material from the plasticizing chamber 11 into the chamber 31 through a passage 13 having a non-return ball valve 34, and thereby forces the ram 30 backwards, carrying with it the chamber 11 and worm 17. When sufficient material has been forced into chamber 31, the worm 17 stops. The ram 30, chamber 11 and worm 17 are then forced forwardly by means of a hydraulic piston 25. In a modification, Figs. 2, 3, injection is effected by forward movement of the ram 30, chamber 11 and worm 17 by means of a ram 51 in a cylinder 52, the worm 17 being simultaneously rotated by a drive motor 53 through a worm drive 54 and coupling 56. Cylinder 52 is secured in a crosshead 47 which is slidably mounted on a carriage 48. The crosshead 47 is connected by tie rods 45, 46 to cylinders 42, 43 containing double-acting rams 40, 41. Cylinders 42, 43 are mounted on a crosshead 44 which carries the chamber 31. After injection, the ram 30, chamber 11, worm 17 and carriage 48 are moved rearwardly by the pressure of material being fed to chamber 31 by worm 17. Finally rams 40, 41 are operated to move the injection chamber 31 away from the mould to break the sprue. Specification 799,672 is referred to.
