The slip energy from a wound rotor induction motor 1, 2, is rectified by rectifier 9 and fed to the armature 6 of a D.C. machine on the same shaft. Speed control is effected by means of variable resistor 14 or by varying the field excitation of the D.C. machine. Alternatively, the stator winding 1 may be adapted for stardelta conversion, or the winding may be tapped. A braking torque may be developed by shunting commutator 11 by a resistor, or by reversing the polarity of the D.C. field winding and connecting a resistor between the commutator 11 and rectifier 9. When the induction motor is supplied from a single-phase source, its rotor having a polyphase winding, the rectifier is protected against induced voltages of high frequency and amplitude at standstill by being shunted by capacitors and series-connected with inductors.
