Abstract
912,990. Control of A.C. motors. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 10, 1961 [May 14, 1960], No. 17109/60. Class 38 (3). At speeds below synchronous, a motor 9, e.g. in a locomotive, operates as an induction motor and has A.C. from a source 1, e.g. an enginedriven alternator, applied to its rotor 8 while its stator 7 is connected to a rectifier 6, followed by an inverter 4 by means of which slip energy is fed back to the source 1. In this condition the speed is controlled by adjustment of the firing angle of the inverter. For higher speeds, switches 3a and 3b change-over to connect the rotor to a D.C. supply 2 while the stator is supplied from the inverter, the rectifier 6 now being connected to the A.C. source 1. Due to the alternating e.m.f. induced in the stator by the rotor the inverter becomes selfcommutating so that the frequency of its output corresponds to the speed of the motor. The motor is thus now operating as a synchronous motor with the rectifier-inverter combination forming a frequency changer to step up the supply frequency to any desired value within the limitations of the motor and the inverter. The speed is now adjusted either by varying the D.C. supply to the inverter 4, giving a constant torque characteristic, or, for constant horse-power, by varying the D.C. excitation of the motor. The inverter can be a mercury arc or a solid state, controlled rectifier. The roles of the stator and rotor of the motor may be transposed.
