Abstract
861,955. Control of motors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 13, 1959 [April 15, 1958], No. 12382/59. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] An adjustable-speed motor comprises an A.C. induction motor 35 and a D.C. motor 33, both mounted on hollow shaft 34, motor 33 being fed through a rectifier 52 with current at the slip voltage from the A.C. rotor windings and converting this slip power to mechanical power to give a constant horse-power output. The rotor windings 41 of motor 35 are connected by leads 48 passing through shaft 34 to slip-rings 46. The current passes, via brushes 50, to semi-conductor, three-phase, full-wave rectifiers 52, the rectifiers being mounted externally to the motor. The direct current from the rectifier is fed to the armature winding 43 of motor 33 through commutator 44. The field winding 39 of motor 33 is excited by rectified current from full-wave rectifier 58, rheostat 59 giving speed control. Weakening of the D.C. motor field current results in decreased back E.M.F. and allows more current to flow in both rotor windings, producing more torque in both motors. In a modification the rectifier of the slip-voltage is mounted on the hollow shaft and rotates with it.
