Abstract

626,611. Rotary converters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 10, 1945, No. 11730. Convention date. May 10, 1944. [Class 35] A polyphase frequency converter having evenly spaced teeth on its rotor has its stator wound with a polyphase exciting winding and a pair of generating windings wound respectively for a number of poles equal to twice the number of rotor teeth plus and minus the number of exciting winding poles, the windings being mutually non-inductive. As shown for a rotor with 11 teeth, the exciting winding 11 is wound for 2 poles and the generating windings 13, 14 are wound for 20 and 24 poles respectively. The machine can be driven by a variable speed motor 17, or it will drive itself in either direction by short-circuiting one or other of the generating windings, in which case the remaining winding will supply power.- Alternatively, the rotor may be provided with a squirrel-cage winding.
