Abstract

563,854. Induction machines. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MAGGS, A. H. July 9, 1942, No. 9537. [Class 35] Inductor machines comprise a laminated stator 1 with poles consisting of a middle section 3 and outer sections 4, 5. Each pole is embraced by a main field winding 6 and each middle section by an auxiliary winding 7. The inductor windings 8, 9 are oppositely wound and are placed on the outer pole sections 4, 5. In order to maintain the magnetic flux over the pole face constant, the middle section 3 has, a width equal to the tooth pitch of the rotor 2, while the end sections have a width equal to half a rotor tooth pitch and are separated by 1¢ tooth pitch. Where it is desired to increase the frequency without unduly increasing the speed of the rotor, the end sections may be divided, or the tips slotted. Armature reaction is compensated by windings 10, 12 around the outer sections of adjacent poles. The machine may be used as a combined A.C. and D.C. motor or generator. or as a converter for A.C. to D.C. or vice versa.
