Abstract

549,490. Rotary converters. SCHWARZ, B. April 18, 1941, No. 5044. [Class 35] A rotary converter of D.C. into A.C. comprises two rotors on a common shaft 0, Fig. 1, each arranged for rotation in a D.C. excited stator and each accommodating a commutator winding C1, C2 connected to a commutator, the two rotor windings having tappings t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP> which are interconnected, D.C. being fed into one commutator through stationary brushgear B 1 and A.C. being taken from the other commutator through rotatable brushgear B2 and slip-rings SL3 rotating with the brushgear B2. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the windings may be accommodated within the same stator and coupled magnetically or they may merge into a single winding connected to both commutators. Field windings F1, F2 receive excitation from the D.C. supply, adjustable by resistors R1, R2. The frequency generated is independent of the speed of the rotor and depends only on the speed of the brushgear, which can be driven by a variable speed motor or through a variable speed gear. Compensating windings are provided to reduce the magnetization by watt-less currents. The output may have any number of phases.
