To avoid the release of energy which might occur in a graphite moderator core 1 in the region of the entry ends of the coolant gas channels 2 due to the graphite temperature falling below a certain level, graphite tubes 3 having shoulders 3a making a sealing fit with the channel are provided, the tubes forming a stagnant gas space 4.
