Abstract
861,252. Well packers. BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc. Sept. 27, 1957, No. 30397/57. Class 85. A well packer has a resilient annular sealing member 18 which has passages 61 connecting internal cavities 60, 60a to the outside of the member. The passages are formed in an annular web 53 and are connected to the cavities by longitudinal grooves 62. The packer also includes a body 10 to which is fixed an abutment ring 24, a sleeve 17 slidably mounted on the body, and an abutment ring and slip expander 13, 19 fixed to the sleeve. The space between the well casing A and the body is sealed by holding the slips 15 against longitudinal movement within the casing, and by raising the body to deform the member into sealing contact with the casing and to cause the slips to grip the casing. When the member is in contact with the casing a peripheral groove 64 forms in the member. Any fluid under pressure in either of the spaces below or above the packer leaks through the groove 64 and passages to the cavities to increase the sealing effect.
