Abstract
861,222. Nuclear fuel elements. A.E.J.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. July 10, 1959 [July 14, 1958], No. 22503/58. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor fuel rod, the casing 1 of beryllium, zirconium or stainless steel, contains pellets of ceramic uranium dioxide 2. The casing is closed by plugs 3, 4 and the bore 5 retains the krypton and xenon gases released by the uranium dioxide during irradiation, thus preventing damage to the casing by internal gas pressure. In an alternative form, voids may be provided at each end of the fuel space.
