Abstract
860,768. Percussive tools. SOC. D'ELECTROCHIMIE D'ELECTROMETALLURGIE ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D' UGINE. March 31, 1959 [April 4, 1958], No. 10915/59. Class 124. A method of making a rock drill comprises surrounding one end of a drill rod with a sleeve of resilient material, locating a drill head on the rod with a skirt surrounding the sleeve, and crimping the skirt to compress the sleeve into firm engagement with the rod to anchor the head thereon. As shown, a drill head G having a cutting insert L and a skirt J is fitted over a sleeve K of rubber which surrounds the end H of a drill rod. The skirt is then crimped by swaging, presscrimping, or knurling so that the sleeve is compressed to make a tight fit on the rod. The head may have a conical section to mate with a conical end on the rod, with or without the insertion of a copper shim. A flange may also be formed on the rod by crimping a steel ring on to a resilient ring on the rod. Specification 807,819 is referred to.
