Abstract

1378358 Percussive drills SMITH-WILLISTON Inc 20 Feb 1973 [8 March 1972] 8377/73 Heading B4C [Also in Division E1] A tapered button 42 is fixed in a bore in a drilling head by forcing a sleeve 44 on to a die 80 to produce an internal sleeve profile corresponding generally to that of the button 42, engaging the sleeve 44 over the button 42 and inserting them into the bore, and forcing the sleeve 44 downwardly on the button 42 so that the sleeve 44 expands to hold the button 42 and bore in engagement. The sleeve 44 may be initially engaged over the button at a force of about 10,000 pounds, and subsequently expanded by a force of about 24,000 pounds. The button is preferably of sintered carbide and the sleeve 44 of heat treated low alloy steel. Worn buttons may be extracted by cutting away, Fig. 2G (not shown), or by spark erosion of the sleeve 44, and the button may taper inwardly from its working end, Fig. 4 (not shown).
