Abstract
306,889. Reed, C. E. Feb. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Borehole apparatus.-In an earth-boring drill of the roller cutter type, each roller cutter unit comprises a shank 2 integral with, and inclined relatively to, a spindle 6 provided with an annular groove 9; a ring 10 is placed on the spindle, floating segments 8 are inserted in the groove 9 to hold the ring 10, and the roller cutter 7 is passed over the segments 8 and connected to the ring 10, as by a threaded joint and a pin 13. The spindle 6 may be of stepped or conical form. After assembling the unit, the shank is inserted into a socket in the drill head and secured as by lock nuts 4, 4<a> such that contact with the side of the borehole tends to tighten them. Lubricant may be passed through a conduit to the base of the spindle.
