Abstract

522,193. Percussive drills. KNUTSON, G. July 6, 1939, No. 19670. [Class 124] A rock drill comprises a shank and detachable bit connected together by a diametrical tongue of dovetail cross-section and arcuate in longitudinal vertical section on the end of one of the parts inserted into a corresponding slot in the end of the other part so as to retain the bit in axial alignment with the shank during drilling. The shank 1 may be formed with a cupped end 3 and a diametrical dovetail curved slot 4 in which is inserted a similarly shaped tongue 11 on the end of the bit, the bit having also a domed portion 10 corresponding to the cupped end of the shank. Arcuate grooves 5, 6 on opposite sides of the slot 4 are provided, either of which engages a projection 12 on the bit to ensure alignment of the parts during assembly and also during drilling. The shank and bit are provided with an axial water orifice. The slot may alternatively be formed in the bit and the tongue on the shank.
