Abstract
658,631. Percussive drills. HALL & PICKLES, Ltd., and RUSSELL, R. Jan. 1, 1949, No. 2. [Class 124] In a percussive drill bit hav ing a tapered bore to receive a tapered portion of a drill rod the length of the skirt of the bit is increased and the line of contact brought nearer to the cutting edge by providing a clearance between the taper on the rod and the taper in the bore of the bit at the free end of the skirt. As shown, a bit has cutting edges 2 and a skirt portion 3, the latter having a tapered bore to receive the tapered end of a drill rod 4. The free end of the skirt may be recessed at 7 or may have a steeper taper joined to the main taper by a radius, Fig. 4 (not shown). The bore of the skirt may have one or more circumferential grooves. The length of the skirt may be three-quarters of the length of the complete bit. Provision may be made for the supply of cleaning fluid.
