Abstract

860,561. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 4, 1950 [Sept. 12, 1949], No. 23532/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor fuel element is formed of discs of fissile material stacked in a tubular container. The contacting surfaces of the discs are coated with a heat conducting metal, such as copper or silver, and thermal contact between the edges of the discs and the tube is made by liquid sodium or alternatively the edges of the discs are urged tightly against the tube walls. In the latter, the discs are curved and when pressed flat inside the container the disc circumference is moved radially outwards and is maintained in contact with the container inner surface by elastic strain.
