A can for a nuclear fuel element exposed to surface temperatures above 300‹C is made of zirconium with a steel outer coating of thickness preferably between 50 and 200 Á. An inner coating may also be applied. An indicator layer may be applied under the steel coating to indicate rupture of the element.
