In a nuclear fuel element, the fuel core and can are separated by a layer consisting of an alloy of the fuel and zinc. The fuel may be uranium, plutonium or thorium. Solder layers may be added as well as the alloy layer, consisting of bismuth, lead, tin or such metals as beryllium, magnesium, calcium, silicon, aluminium, iron or vanadium. The deposition methods may be electrolysis, vaporisation in vacuo, or deposition in the molten state. The fuel core is inserted into the can either by shrinking or by pressing.
