860,167. Gripper shuttle looms. VYZKUMNY USTAV TVARECICH STROJU A TECHNOLOGIE TVARENI. Sept. 9, 1957, No. 28366/57. Class 142(2) A double-ended gripper shuttle consists of a tubular body 6, each end 3 of which forms one jaw of a gripper; the other jaws consist of heads 22, 22a, carried by tubular stems 2 on which are fixed flanges 5 loaded by springs 4 tending to close the jaws. During beat-up, a rod 1 rides on to a fixed ramp 9, causing a flange 7 to push open the jaw 22; suction applied at a port A in the shuttle box 8 draws the end of a weft supply 10 into the space between the jaws 3, 22; as the slay recedes, the rod 1 rides off the ramp 9, whereupon the jaws close to grip the weft. The shuttle is picked by air pressure applied at a port B in the shuttle box. Forming selvedges. As the shuttle enters the shed, the end of the preceding pick P, which is still held by the jaw 22a, is turned into the shed to form a tucked-in selvedge, and slides out of the jaws as the shuttle continues its movement. Weft stop motion. The heads 22, 22a are insulated from the stems 2 so that when weft is present there is no circuit from the shuttle box 8 through the body 6 to the heads; if weft is not gripped between a head and the co-operating jaw 3, a circuit is closed to a spring-loaded plunger (not shown) which makes contact with the head when the shuttle is in the box.
