Abstract

860,139. Tubular heat exchangers. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd., and CARR, F. April 17, 1959 [May 12, 1958]. No. 15116/58. Class 64(3) Each of a plurality of holes 2 formed in a plate to receive heat exchanger tubes (not shown) is enlarged intermediate its ends into a continuous groove 3 one side of which opens into the hole, the grooves being arranged in the same plane and of a depth such that they intersect one another whereby a fluid under pressure can be conducted from a common source through e.g. a port 4 into each groove. In a steam condenser, the fluid supplied to the grooves may be condensate or other fluid supplied at a higher pressure than the cooling water flowing through the tubes in order to prevent leakage by way of the tube plate from the water boxes into the steam space. It is stated also that the invention may be used to test heat exchanger tubes for leaks prior to operation.
