Abstract

728,592. Tubular heat-exchangers. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd. Nov. 3, 1952 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 28040/51. Class 64 (3). Relates to heat-exchangers of the type employing, "leakproof" tubes 10 i.e. double-walled tubes (see Fig. 2), having a channel 15 formed between the tube walls 14, 16 for evacuating any fluid which might leak through either wall. In a heat-exchanger according to the invention, such tubes are provided with jackets 12 through which one of the heat-exchanging fluids is circulated. In the arrangement shown, the jacketted "leakproof" tubes are arranged in vertical rows, the tubes 10 of each row being connected together and forming a unit which may be readily removed and replaced if required. The connections comprise tubular spigots 18 extending radially from the jackets 12 and serving also to interconnect the jackets of a tube row in series. The individual tubes 10 of each row may also be connected in series, e.g. by U-bends (see Fig. 1B, not shown), or they may be parallel connected as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In this latter arrangement, alternate tube rows are connected between headers 26a, 26b and 28a, 28b respectively, the jackets 12 of each row being series connected between headers 30a, 30b. A casing 32 may surround the tube assembly to collect any leakage fluid which may pass into the channels 15. The tubes and jackets may be of circular or rectangular cross-section. Specifications 703,081 and 728,131 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the tubes or the jackets may be supported in holes in supporting plates or on horizontal bars.
