[Also in Group XXIX] In the cylinder head of a reciprocating compressor is a valve arrangement comprising a valve plate 12, Fig. 1, a discharge valve 13, a suction valve 14 and movement limiting means 15 all secured to the plate 12 by a rivet 37. The plate 12 is formed of three circular members 20, 21, 22, Fig. 2 bonded together, which members have a central opening 27 and concentric rows of holes 23, 24, 25, the two latter only opening through the member 20 ; the intermediate member 21 embodies a circle of openings 26 that interconnect the holes 24, 25. Some of these holes and openings may be of a single annular construction. The discharge valve 13, Fig. 3, consists of a flat spring-steel disc embodying an annular portion 34 and a deflecting part 35 of S-shape, as shown, or of a radial spoke construction. Movement of this valve is determined by the distance between the means 15, Fig. 1, and the plate 12. The suction valve 14, Fig. 4, which is similar to the valve 13 having an annular portion 40 and a deflecting part 41, also incorporates peripheral protuberances 43, which, upon opening of the valve abut a shoulder 5 in the cylinder wall and so limit the valve movement. The means 15, Fig. 1, is of the configuration shown and is provided with two concentric rows of openings. The whole assembly is maintained in position by a spring 11 having a central domed part and a number of limbs extending therefrom which contact the perimeter of the means 15; the spring may consist of a ring member only. On the suction stroke of the compressor gas is drawn from an annular recess 6 through holes 25, openings 26, holes 24, and past the unseated suction valve 14, into the cylinder. On the compression stroke the suction valve 14 is seated and the gas passes through the slots therein, holes 23, and unseats the discharge valve 13, to flow into the cylinder head via the openings in the means 15.
