Abstract

876,306. Compressors. VILTER MANUFACTURING CO. May 23, 1960 [June 29, 1959], No. 18042/60. Class 8(1). A refrigerant compressor comprises a piston 15, Fig. 1, having a cup shaped top 30 whose annular flange 17 is radially slotted at 20, Fig. 2, and which, on' the compression stroke communicates with an annular gap 14 so that any liquid accumulation trapped within the final compression zone will be forced through the slots 20 into the gap 14 and thus prevent damage to the annular sheet-metal discharge valve 19, locally mounted on springs 28; the gaseous component being discharged into the compression chamber 34, past the valve 19 by way of the annular gap 13 formed between the reaction plate 25 and the cup-shaped cylinder head member 29. In the event of the slots 20 and gap 14 providing inadequate decompression the entire end closure assembly 12 moves away from the piston 15, against the action of the spring 32. An extra liquid cavity 36, Fig. 4, may be provided by producing an annular flange 171 with a smaller external diameter and the radial slots 20 in the annular flange 17 may be replaced by radial holes. On the suction stroke, the annular sheet-metal suction valve 18, locally mounted on springs 26 lifts and gas enters the cylinder 10 by way of the duct 23 in the frame 22 and the inlet ports 24.
