Abstract

1,042,740. Compressors. INGERSOLLRAND CO. March 22, 1965 [March 27, 1964], No. 12031/65. Heading F1N. In a compressor, Figs. 1 and la (not shown), wherein a plunger 21 reciprocates in a packing assembly 19 to compress gas supplied to a compression chamber 18, the heat generated by the friction between the plunger and the packing assembly is absorbed by conducting the compressed gas or the gas to be compressed through passages 39 disposed adjacent the packing assembly 19. The compression chamber 18 is closed by a three part valve body 23, 24, 25 having an inlet valve 28 and a concentric annular outlet valve 32. Gas such as ethylene compressed in the chamber 18 passes through passages 29, 30 in the valve body sections 23, 24 and past the outlet valve 32 into an annular outlet chamber 33 formed in the periphery of the body section 25. The compressed gas passes from the chamber 33 to passageways 38, formed between a valve sleeve 26 and a housing 11, and communicating with the passages 39. The passages 39 are defined in part by the outer surface of the packing assembly 19 and hence the compressed gas flowing therethrough to an outlet 35 cools the packing assembly. In a second construction, Figs. 4 and 4A (not shown) gas is admitted to the compression chamber after first cooling the packing assembly.
