Abstract

1,166,718. Compressors. INGERSOLLRAND CO. March 21, 1967, No.13232/67. Heading F1N. A compressor comprises a cylinder 10 and a coaxial valve assembly 28 separated by an annular clearance space 38 from an enclosing casing 16, the space 38 being supplied with fluid before or after compression by a piston 14 reciprocating in the cylinder 10 to thereby subject the cylinder and valve assembly to an external compressive force. The valve assembly is formed from three cylindrical members 30, 32, 34 having inlet passages 48, 50, 58 controlled by spring-loaded poppet or ball type inlet valves 54 and outlet passages 60, 62, 64, 72 controlled by spring-loaded poppet or ball type outlet valves 68. Fluid is communicated to the inlet passages 48 through an inlet 44 and a circular chamber 46 both formed in an end member 22 closing the casing 16. After compression the fluid passes from the outlet passages 72 formed as grooves in the periphery of the member 30 and the cylinder 10 into both the clearance space 38 and an annular passage 74 communicating with a compressed fluid outlet 76 in the casing 16. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown), the valve assembly 28 is modified, whereby the outlet 76 and inlet 44 are reversed and hence the space 38 is pressurized by the fluid entering the compressor.
