Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0859727/IV(b)/1> and their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts (wherein A is <FORM:0859727/IV(b)/2> X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl, alkoxy or aryl group or a cyano, methylthio, methanesulphonyl, dimethylsulphamoyl or trifluoromethyl group; and one or more of the piperazine nuclear carbon atoms may bear a lower alkyl group), and the preparation thereof by: (1) reacting a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0859727/IV(b)/3> or an acid addition salt thereof with a morpholino carbonyl halide; and (2) reacting a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0859727/IV(b)/4> (wherein Z is a halogen atom) or an acid addition salt thereof with morpholine; also pharmaceutical compositions containing the products (see Group VI). Other general processes for making the compounds of the invention are disclosed in the Provisional Specification. The qualification "lower" means that the group in question has not more than four carbon atoms. 3-Chloro-10-[3- (4-chlorocarbonyl-1-piperazinyl) -propyl]-phenthiazine hydrochloride is made from 3-chloro-10-[3-(1-piperazinyl) propyl] phenthiazine and phosgene.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise at least one compound of the general formula: <FORM:0859727/VI/1> N an acid addition salt with an inorganic or organic acid or quaternary ammonium salt thereof (wherein A is -(Clh)3- or -Clh- <FORM:0859727/VI/2> ; X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl, alkoxy or acyl group or a cyano, methylthio, methanesulphonyl, dimethylsulphamyl or trifluoromethyl group, and one or more of the piperazine nuclear carbon atoms may bear a lower alkyl group) in association with a significant amount of a pharmaceutical carrier. They may be administered orally or parenterally; and be in the form of liquids or solids or any combination thereof. The qualification "lower" means that the group in question has not more than four carbon atoms.
