Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula: <FORM:0947496/C2/1> in which R1 and R2 represent alkyl radicals, X represents an alkylene radical, R3 and R3 represent hydrogen atoms or aralkyl (e.g. furfuryl) alkyl or alkenyl groups, or R3 is hydrogen and R4 is a cycloalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or heterocyclic radical, or R3 and R4 together form a heterocyclic ring which may be substituted; and their acid addition salts; and processes for the preparation thereof wherein (1) an appropriate 7-haloalkylxanthine is reacted with a compound HNR3R4, or (2) an appropriate 7-unsubstituted xanthine is reacted with a compound Hal.X.NR3R4, Hal being a halogen atom. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise an acceptable carrier or diluent together with the above compounds. Forms suitable for oral (tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions), parenteral (solutions) and rectal (suppositories) administration are mentioned. The compounds stimulate the central nervous system, and have spasmolytic action on smooth muscles and a positive inotropic action on the heart. Specification 947,494 is referred to.
