858,806. Sewing machines. DARANDIK, W., and HAHN, E. H. P. M. Sept. 17, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956], No. 29305/57. Class 112 A linking machine is mounted on a stationary support so as to be rotatable, relative to that support, about the central axis of the machine when the machine is operating. The trough 14 supporting the needle ring 2 is itself supported on a bush 20 journalled, on roller bearings 22, in a recess at the top of the supporting column 23. The drive shaft 13 of the machine is driven from a shaft 25 by a coupling 24, an adjustable slipping clutch 31 being provided. The trough is tiltable about a pivot pin 39 to permit inspection of the gearing fitted in the lower part of the machine. The machine may be held in the tilted position by a locking device. In one modification to the drive (Fig. 6, not shown), a motor drive shaft in the column 23 is connected to the drive shaft 13 by means of a belt drive which includes a countershaft mounted in the trough. In another modification (Fig. 4, not shown), a driving motor is mounted in the trough in place of the countershaft and drives the shaft 13 by a single belt. Power to the motor is supplied to the rotatable trough by slip rings. The invention may also be applied to linking machines wherein the supporting column is displaced from the machine axis, and to machines suspended from an overhead anchorage.
