Abstract
147,096. Bechtolsheim, Clemens, Baron von, Bechtolsheim, Max, Baron von, and Bechtolsheim, Georg, Baron von. May 30, 1919, [Convention date]. Driving and balancing.-In a separator or other centrifugal machine supported on a fixed base, the bearing surface of the shaft engaging with the base or with the drum, or both these surfaces are curved, the radius of curvature being greater than the distance between the centre of gravity of the supported mass and the said surface, so that the centre of gravity of the supported part is raised when the shaft is tilted. A shaft a, Fig. 1, driven by a pulley e, is rotatable in a sleeve b, the spherical surface c of which rests on a plane support d. The sleeve is connected with the frame d by a ring segment f of leather &c. A head h with spherical surface g rests against the drum, being guided in an extension i and driving by a catch k. Alternatively, the surface d may be curved and c plane. In a modification, a shaft a, Fig. 3, rotates in a sleeve l having a collar m resting on a ring n which has two curved surfaces and rests itself on the frame. The surfaces of the ring n consist of two cylindrical surfaces with axes at rightangles, permitting a tipping movement in all directions. Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the foot q of a stationary shaft p has a moved sole resting on a plane surface, the upper part of the foot being spherical and centred by a spring-pressed ring r. A hollow shaft o drives the drum through a connexion including a ring t similar in form to the ring n, Fig, 3, and is centred by a spherical nose v engaging a cylindrical bore in the ring t. In another modification, a fixed driving-shaft w, Fig. 6, drives a shaft a through a catch, the spherical base y of the shaft a resting in a hollow cylindrical head x of the shaft w. Crossed cords z hold the shaft a to get over the critical speed.
