748,787. Fatigue testing machines. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 23, 1954 [July 14, 1953], No. 19560/53. Class 106 (2). In a machine for testing fatigue in which an out-of-balance mass is rotated on the free end of a cantiliver-held test piece, the centrifugal force due to the loading head when the test piece deflects is balanced out by springs so that the test piece is subject only to the load due to the mass. The test piece I is hold in a bracket 13 and the loading head 27 carrying a test weight 29 is rotated on its free end by a motor 33 through a flexible drive 32. The head 27 is carried by ball bearing on a split sleeve fitting on the test piece and having centred on it a collar 21. A fixed ring 17 carries screws 18 which bear on springs 36 in cups 19 on the sleeve 21, the springs balancing out the loading head centrifugal force. The test piece may be surrounded by a heating or cooling jacket. The springs may be adjusted to balance out the static load of the head. The invention is especially applicable to ceramic materials or ceramic-metal compositions.
