Abstract

1,078,911. Fatigue testing machines. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Aug. 25, 1964 [May 12, 1964], No. 19750/64. Heading G1S. In a fatigue testing machine a testpiece 15 is held between chucks 17, 19, chuck 17 being mounted on the drive shaft 10a of an A. C. induction motor 10 and chuck 19 supported on one end of a shaft 20. The other end of shaft 20 is journalled in a ball race 21 co-operating with a shaft 25 pivoted to a steelyard 30. A balance weight is provided at 35 and a load is applied by a slidable jockey weight 38. During a test run, a load is applied by the jockey weight 38 to the testpiece, which is then rotated by the motor 10. Simultaneously, a time counting device is set in operation at 41. On breaking of the testpieces, the shaft 20 falls actuating a microswitch 45 to control the supply of current to the counting device. In another arrangement for use with small testpieces, (see Fig. 4, not shown), the main steelyard 30 is locked, and an auxiliary shaft, fork and steelyard 53, 54, 52 are employed. The auxiliary steelyard 52 is mounted pivotally on a member 57 which may be clamped on the main steelyard.
