A counting scale comprises a hollow, slotted balance beam 1 balanced on a knife edge fulcrum 5 and rotatably mounting inside it a shaft with screw-thread portions 27, 28 of opposite hand on opposite sides of the fulcrum respectively carrying by means of screwthreaded collars and stirrups 16, 21, guided in slots in the beam, a scale pan 14 on which the articles to be counted are placed and a counterweight 20 balancing the scale pan when empty. One end of the beam is pivotally connected by a rod 10 to a spring balance indicator 7. A few only of the articles to be counted are first placed in the scale pan 14 and the screw-threaded shaft is rotated by an electric motor 6 carried on the beam and energized through a switch and rheostat 29 in the beam supporting pillar 3, causing a traverse of the scale pan 14 and counterweight 20 in opposite directions from the fulcrum without disturbance of initial balance, until the indicator 7 exactly registers the number of articles in the pan. The motor is then stopped and, on any load of articles then being placed in the scale pan, their number is directly shown on the indicator. By setting the scale to indicate a number of unit weights, e.g. ounces, placed in the scale pan, the apparatus can be used also as a weighing machine.
