A filter rod is made by bunching together and enclosing in a wrapping tube 21 , Fig. 4, a plurality of substantially parallel yarns 11 each formed as in Specification 732,929 of substantially continuous fibres a substantial proportion of which are convoluted individually into coils, loops or whorls at random intervals along their lengths and all of which are bundled together to form a relatively non-extensible yarn core provided externally with a multitude of ring-like loops 31 irregularly spaced along the yarn surface. The yarns 11, Fig. 2 (plan view), which are preferably twisted, are drawn from adjustably braked bobbins 12 by roller pairs 13, 19 between which they are sprayed from above and below in a cabinet 14 with between 3 % and 20 % of their own weight of binder e.g. glyceryl triacetate where the yarns are produced from secondary cellulose acetate. The sprayed yarns are bunched in a funnel 21, and pass on to an endless conveyor belt (not shown) supporting a cigarette paper wrapper drawn from a supply reel and which is wrapped about the bunched yarns helically or as shown with a longitudinal lap joint using a garniture 25, glueing wheel 28, folder 29 and heater 30. The filter rod so formed may be conveyed past a knife which cuts it into lengths and the binder may be set by further heat treatment of the cut lengths. If transparent heat sealing cellulose acetate film is used instead of cigarette paper, the glueing wheel 28 may be dispensed with. The Registered Trade Marks "Taslon" and "Opaceta" are mentioned.
