Abstract

857,789. Metal pipes. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. April 24, 1957 [April 24, 1956; July 27, 1956], No. 13124/57. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid pulsation damping device which is inserted in a fluid-conveying pipe, 21, 22, Fig. 1, consists of a tube 7 with a series of radial ports arranged in axial rows 8-12, the tube being encased by a sleeve 23 of rubber or other elastic material which in turn is surrounded by a coiled-coil tension spring 30 so that fluid acts through the radial ports and at excess pressures distends the sleeve 23 and spring 30 thereby enlarging the volume between the sleeve and tube. When the excess pressure pulse ceases the sleeve and spring force the surplus fluid back into the tube 7. One end of the tube may be closed and the other end connected to the fluid pipe by a T-joint. The shape of the coiled cross-section of the spring may be circular, rectangular or square whilst two telescopically arranged tubes enclose the spring to prevent the ingression of dust and moisture. In a modification, the tube 110, Fig. 5, has imperforate end parts 116, 117 and the elastic sleeve which extends over such parts is encased in a shield comprising two radially and axially overlapping semi-cylindrical members 119, 120 of spring metal. A clamp 130, 135 is provided around each end of the sleeve-shield assembly, the clamp bolts also serving as anchors for the ends of the externally disposed helically wound coil spring 140.
