Abstract

Compressed insulation material is used for the reduction of noise and vibration in pipes induced by fluid flow and also to prevent heat loss. The material (3), solid, elastic or visco elastic is packed into the annular space between the pipe (1) and envelope (2). A requirement for the envelope, either in tubular form or as a wire wrapping is that it must have an elastic limit greater than that of the pipe (1). An internal pressure, p, is applied such that the pipe wall and the envelope are stressed to greater and less than their elastic limits respectively. Whereas the envelope remains elastic the pipe is expanded plastically so that on removing the pressure the envelope contracts to compress the insulation.
