Abstract

A steel which becomes martensitic with a minimum Rockwell "C" hardness of 63 after air cooling from the austenitizing temperature contains by weight .C.0.55.to.0.75% .Mn.0.70.to.1.76% .Si.1.20.to.2.00% .Cr.1.00.to.2.50% .Mo.0.50.to.1.20% It is hardened from the temperature range 1600-1750 DEG F., and may be tempered at 300 DEG F., up to which temperature it is resistant to softening. Use of the composition for jail bars, dies, gauges, shear blades, cutter bars for lawn mowers, chuck jaws, cams, boring tools, and clinker bars is referred to.
